Clover Mite
Bryobia
Appearance: Smaller than the head of a pin at
1/10 inch long and reddish-brown to olive-green in color. Upon
closer inspection the abnormally long front legs can be seen,
thus distinguishing the clover mite from the spider mite. The
younger stages are bright red. If crushed, they will leave a red
stain or streak on light colored surfaces.

Concerns: Clover mites are a nuisance pest in
relation to people; however they can sometimes do some plant
damage.
Habits: Clover mites feed on fluids from plants
like grass, and are common around most buildings. During the
fall, however, the mites may crawl onto building foundations in
large numbers and deposit eggs within cracks found in the
building exterior. In the spring, the tiny red larvae hatch and
may crawl up the foundation and through cracks around windows
and in walls and then into the building. Dozens, sometimes
hundreds, of these mites then may be seen on window sills,
curtains, and on walls. When smashed, a red stain may result
that may be difficult to remove from fabrics.
Inside, the mites cannot find food and will soon die. These
mites do not bite people or pets. During most of the year,
clover mites are found outside in lawns and on other landscaping
plants. They may be seen inside during the spring.
Control: The most effective treatment is
applying a residual insecticide/miticide barrier around the
foundation and soil surface in an 8 to 9 foot band around the
perimeter of the home, as well around the doors and windows.
Shrubbery and the trunks of trees within the area should also be
treated. Interior populations of these mites inside should be
removed using a vacuum cleaner until the populations are reduced
enough that sightings are no longer occurring. Sealing all
exterior cracks and entry points will go a long way in reducing
how many get inside, and together with removing lush vegetation
around the house, a more permanent control can be achieved.
