Carpenter Ant
Camponotus

Appearance: There are 2 common types of carpenter ants in Colorado. One type is smaller with ½ the body red, and ½ black. The other, larger species are usually black ranging from ½"-1" long.

Concerns:
Typically considered a nuisance pest, ants are not disease carriers, nor do the house infesting ants typically bite.

Habits: Different species of ants have various food habits. Sweet materials are favored by some ants while others prefer to feed on seed, grease, or protein-rich- foods. Ants periodically produce mating swarms with large numbers of winged males and females, emerging from the colony and flying. Swarming usually happens during warm evenings from early spring through late summer following wet weather.

Control: They commonly excavate galleries or tunnels in rotting or sound trees and will readily infest the wooden portions of structures. They prefer to excavate wood damaged by fungus and are often found in conjunction with moisture problems. They don't actually eat the wood; they excavate it to form nests. The workers will often expel fibrous sawdust from the nest through slit like openings in the surface of the wood. These piles of sawdust are good signs to look for when trying to locate a colony in an infested structure.

It is important to locate the source of the ants; which means finding the nest(s). The most complete control is accomplished when the nest itself is treated with a residual spray or dust. Infestations can be reduced by treating travel routes that the workers follow while foraging, with materials that the ants take back to the colony. Infestations that originate outdoors can be reduced by the application of barrier treatments of residual insecticides, as well as physical control methods such as sealing entry points around the exterior of the house and destroying nests. EnviroPest uses Granular & Gel style baits, as well as residual liquid applications and site inspections.
