Appearance: Boxelder Bugs are usually about ½" long, often black and red in color, with three red stripes on the thorax (body). The nymphs are smaller and bright red.

Concerns: Boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest, not associated with biting or any form of disease transmission.

Habits: They are found of feeding on the leaves, twigs, and seeds of female box elder trees, however they will also feed on maple, ash and the young fruit of grapes, apples, and plums. Over winter the adults are in dry protected locations. They emerge in the spring and lay small, red eggs in the cracks and crevices of the bark on box elder trees. They become a nuisance when they attempt to enter homes or office buildings. They can stain window coverings with their feces and they can bite if handled roughly.

Control: The bugs can be chemically prevented from entering structures by applying a 6'-8' protective insecticide barrier around the building's perimeter, however physically sealing the structure will prove much more effective and last a lot longer than spraying. Bugs in the structure can be vacuumed up & the bag removed to an exterior trash receptacle.
